Newtown Art Walk
Meet the artists
Photographer Mongezi Gongo joined art curator and gallery owner Zama Phakathi on her latest walk around the art galleries and studios of Newtown. See the highlights of the journey into the art world of Jozi, and be sure to join the next walk, happening on the 27th of February.
Meeting the artist at Bag Factory Studios
Joburg-based art curator Zama Phakathi runs a mobile art gallery Stop Sign. Zama is a great supporter of emerging African artists, hence the choice of the gallery's latest location — Newtown. The precinct is becoming Joburg's new creative epicenter, with new galleries and studios opening every month. Specially for Gummie, Zama agreed to take a small group of people on a three-hour-long walk around the neighborhood and visit the artists in their creative spaces for exclusive viewings of the works in progress.
