Weekender: Anna-Belle Mulder
Joburg-based blogger and photographer shares her plans for the weekend of 13th to 15th of March
Anna-Belle clearly has more hours in a day than the rest of us. She works in advertising, runs a blog Shesaid.co.za and organizes weekend city walks where she shares incredible stories about the places and people of Joburg. In December last year Anna-Belle launched her new venture — Jobest.co.za blog which she started with Angie Durrant. Find out what she is up to this weekend.
"My weekend normally starts on a Friday evening, with a walk at James and Ethel Gray park (Melrose Arch) with my boyfriend Craig or at Wolves cafe (3 Corlett Drive, Illovo, www.wolves.co.za), where I’ll have a drink with my friends and partners Angie Durrant and Misha Cotzee. Normally I’m so tired that if Craig doesn’t have a gig that night I just go home.
In the morning I’m having one of my city walks in Joburg CBD, so I’ll start the day early, at around 8. I love having coffee at Post (70 Juta Street, www.post-bl.tumblr.com) in Braamfontein before meeting the group and heading towards Newtown. We usually go over the bridge, past the Sheds into Mining district — my favourite area in the city centre. It’s really pretty. When preparing for my walks I try to find old books about Joburg. I spent a lot of time in the Joburg Library (Market street, CBD, 011 022 0916). I would also recommend Gerald Garner’s book “Joburg Ten Ahead” to those who want to know more about the city.
After the walk, I’ll be heading to The Butcher Shop & Grill (Shop 30, Nelson Mandela Square, www.thebutchershop.co.za) in Sandton. Angie and I are doing a review on it for our blog Jobest. Apparently their steaks are out of this world. It is situated on Nelson Mandela Square — I’m excited about going there. Joburgers don’t often walk at touristy places like this while it is actually really nice.
There is no set plan for Saturday night yet. Normally I’ll go watch live music at The Bohemian (167 Perth Street, Westdene, www.thebo.co.za) or Bassline (10 Henry Nxumalo Street, Newtown, www.bassline.co.za). Go Barefoot is one of my favourite bands at the moment. Or I might just stay in and work.
There is a Dance Umbrella festival at the Market Theatre (Cnr Bree and Miriam Makeba, Newtown, www.http://markettheatre.co.za) on Sunday. I’m experimenting with different kinds of photo shoots and trying to take pictures that I don’t normally take. It’s dark there, the objects are moving and you’re sitting still so it’s going to be really challenging. But that’s in the evening. On Sunday mornings, Craig and I normally go for breakfast. Fournos at Bluebird centre is one of the favourite spots. Eggs Benedict are so good there. After that I might go on a city mission or join an Instawalk in town. I must check if there is an Igers Jozi instawalk this weekend. It’s always fun".
