Shortlist: Eve Rakow

Vocalist of "The Frown", the enigmatic diva and cheese lover shares her favorite hangouts in Jozi

Eve recently moved to Linden and has already become a regular at the local establishments. She prefers chilled places to the fancy ones and would love to spend the whole weekend in bed.

She goes to The Argentinean bakery (Corner of 4th Ave and 7th Street, Linden  all the time for coffee and a croissant. "Their croissants are to die for. It's so lovely to walk into a place and not even have to say anything — they just give me my flat white", she says. She loves the relaxed atmosphere of it. "I'd rather hang out with grannies having a slice of cake than cool people having meetings. I feel like I could come here in my pyjamas". Her number one choice for breakfast is Nice on 4th (Corner 14th Street and Fourth Avenue, Parkhurst). Their signature dish — the breakfast basket with eggs, bacon and tomato relish — is Eve's favourite, which she prefers with a half portion of crumpets. What makes this place especially appealing to her is the owner. "You can tell it's run by someone who loves what they're doing", she says. A perfect weekend would include both meals brought to her in bed, but once going out, she loves having picnics in Emmarentia. Cheese is a big weakness of hers, so she does do her grocery shopping at a cheese spot on Beyers Naude. Nice snacks, a jug of Pimms and a bunch of friends in the park— This is Eve's perfect weekend afternoon.

If shopping is on the list, she'll head to the Asseblief stall at the Neighbourgoods Market (73 Juta street, Braamfontein). Another vintage address that she loves — Bounty Hunters (Corner Fourth Avenue and Main Road, Melville). "The owner is cat crazy — the whole place is literally crawling with cats. She'll even give you one if she believes you can give it a good home", Eve says.

In the evening, she'll go to one of her favourite restaurants in Joburg — Thunder Gun (Shop 5, Palala Centre, Corner Beyers Naude and Lewisham Road, Blackheath). "I have to limit how often I go there because I will actually die of a heart attack", she laughs. She orders a sirloin with an entire wheel of camembert on top— every single time. For a drink or two she'll hit the Irish Pub in Linden (Corner of Salerno and 5th Avenue, Linden). She is fascinated by the characters who hang out there. "Like, an Irish guy who stops in after work and spends the first five minutes of the conversation (one you didn't even start) telling you it's good to be away from his wife, and the next half hour going on about how much he loves her". When it comes to dancing, Kitcheners (5 De Beer street, Braamfontein) is her absolute favourite. It's a melting pot of people — for Eve, this is Joburg at it's best.
